Blogging Why?

Okay, I admit I have not been a huge fan of this whole blogging thing. I like reading them but am not big on writing my own.  However, I admit I have just become hooked on the Live Blog happening with Hurricane Sandy (even though I am just reading it.)  This might be some of the most fascinating news coverage of a major storm I have ever seen.  Why?

Someone quoted on the site   http://tinyurl.com/9yfl44n  "It's news by the people.  For the people."  It sure is.  As fast as things are happening it is being posted.  By regular folks.  Yahoo News! is moderating.  Other feeds are from services such as NY Edison, the Red Cross, NYC Mayor, and more.

Are you wondering about friends?  Ask.  As I sat and watched the feed running I was wondering about a friend in Harrisburg, PA.  Then there it was....thunder snow in Seven Springs, PA and Harrisburg expected to get the worst of it by 2am EST.

People are posting photos and asking about areas because they can't reach family.  Others let them know what is happening locally and still others verify information coming across.  Rumors being dispelled quickly.  The Live Blog is being updated faster than CNN!!  People can freely question things and get answers.  It doesn't seem to be slanted for a news report.  Too bad all our news can't come to us this way: real time, real people, real news.

By the way, there are more than 30,000 people on this live chat!!!  Wow!!!

I don't think I am going to get much homework done tonight.  I am a bit obsessed watching the storm move across the country by people living through it.  It has probably taken me an hour to write this because I keep going back and forth.

Now I just need an education blog that pulls me in like this.....

Going back to the storm....

PS  Just saw a note from a dad in Afghanistan worried about his family in VA.  That is a turn of events as I am sure they spend every day worrying about him.  One minute later he had a response from someone watching a live report from the town in VA.  That is a fast response time!!!

  1. At best, once we get past the initial inevitable "what is this blogging /tweeting/sharing" parts, these tools are at their core about one thing:

    Connecting.

    Great example of that here.
